This was the 3rd Onsen hotel that we have stayed and it is the only onsen that is really hot. We really enjoyed the onsen during our stay in this hotel. The hotel location is also very good, there are many shops and restaurants opposite the hotel (1 min walk) and only 4 mins walk to hell valley. The premium buffet is very good, must try. We want to give special thanks to the hotel for helping us organise the birthday celebration for my wife and her good friend. They really went extra miles to help us make the birthday celebration a good one. My wife and her good friend had an enjoyable and memorable birthday celebration. We also want to special mention the 2 Chinese speaking staffs (a Taiwanese lady and a Japanese man who speaks English) for the amazing service, both of them have done more than what a front desk staff would have normally do.

This hotel is perfectly suited to experience an authentic onsen, located in the middle of volcanic mountains and within walking distance to the famous Hell Valley. The rooms in this ryokan are spacious, the futons very comfortable. The outdoor onsen is surrounded by rocks and lush green woods. We enjoyed breakfast and dinner in buffet style, but only after we decided to pay for the upgrade which was yen 3000,- per person which is absolutely reasonable. We would recommend you to do the same unless you are fine with finding yourself together with large groups of Chinese tourists cramped in a rather loud dining hall and lower quality of food. With the above mentioned upgrade we were perfectly happy - this was the quality we had expected!

Hotel Mahoroba has a relatively inexpensive shuttle option from Sapporo to Noboribetsu which made the transfer with all our luggage easy. The staff were polite and welcoming. We had a spacious suite with a sitting area and private onsen bath. It's absolutely worth it to spend extra for this amenity if you can, but if you can't, don't worry. The two expansive onsen facilities provided numerous baths and switch between men and women each day, so you can experience them both. Without a doubt, my favorite was the outdoor pools on B2. There is something surreal about sitting in steaming hot mineral water as fat flakes of snow drift down. It was incredible! If we are ever in Noboribetsu again, we will return to Hotel Mahoroba.

We booked a room for family of 3, in Japanese style room at first, but it was too small for 3 futon beds. I wonder why it was indicated room for 3 at the website. We had to upgrade to Western style room (did not know there were 2 options as was not available at the booking stage) and that was fantastic. The Customer Service Wakashi was amazing, with her speed of service to resolve our room issue. Onsen was fabulous. It was my first time seeing such extensive variety of pool options for Onsen from Acid to Sulphur Onsen. The amenities in Onsen was extensive beyond basic, with facial cleansing and moisturiser, and hair serum too.

Old hotel but very clean. The elevators are very quick contrary to elevators in old facilities. Great bathing facilities with outdoor and indoor baths and complimentary skin care and lotion products for use after bathing. All you can eat buffet style breakfast and dinner. Staff are very respectful and do not seem to keep tabs on how long you stay or rush you to finish eating. I stayed for two nights and the food choices although very diverse—could be repetitive. Location: 10 min walk to bear park base and 13 min walk to entrance of Hell Valley.
